In this chapter, we learn how to express money in Penang Hokkien.

The word for ringgit is korh1. One ringgit comprises one hundred sen, which is expressed as looi1. Ten looi makes one puat1. The word looi also means money, and is used as in "kooi looi" meaning "how much?"

Often the word looi can be dropped, in which case I show in example in brackets.





Ringgit = korh
RM0.01 = chit looi
RM0.05 = goh looi
RM0.10 = chit puat
RM0.20 = norh puat
RN0.25 = jee-ch'arp-goh looi
RM1.00 = chit korh
RM1.10 = korh et
RM1.20 = korh jee
RM1.30 = korh sarh
RM1.95 = korh kau-ch'arp-goh (looi) RM2.00 = noh korh
RM3.00 = sarh korh
RM4.10 = si korh et
RM4.20 = si korh jee
RM4.25 = si korh jee-goh
RM5.30 = goh korh sarh
RM5.50 = goh korh puah (puah means "half")
RM6.50 = lark korh puah
RM15.65 = ch'arp-goh korh lark-ch'arp-goh looi

RM100 = chit phak korh
RM135 = chit-phak sarh-ch'arp-goh korh RM150 = phak-goh korh
RM211 = norh-phak ch'arp-et korh
RM626 = lark-phak jee-ch'arp-lark korh
RM1000 = chit-cheng korh
RM1500 = cheng-goh korh
RM2000.03 = norh-cheng korh sarh looi
RM6513.15 = lark-cheng goh-phak ch'arp-sarh korh ch'arp-goh looi
RM10,000 = chit-bahn korh
