Masjid Umar Ibn Al-Khattab (GPS: 5.3239, 100.28567), or better known simply as the Bayan Baru Mosque, is the main mosque in the Bayan Baru township in Penang. It was built in the 1980's, and was named after Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, also known as Umar the Great or Omar the Great, the second caliph, a highly regarded figure among Sunni Muslims. He was assassinated in 644AD by Pirouz Nahavandi, a Persian soldier, while the caliph was leading prayers in the mosque.
Masjid Umar Ibn Al-Khattab is located just across the road from the Bayan Baru Market and Bayan Baru Hawker Centre.
