View of the open sea from the mouth of Sungai Juru, at Kuala Juru (29 June 2016)
Sungai Juru is one of the major rivers in Seberang Perai on the Penang Mainland. It comprises a main branch, which emerges from its source somewhere near the north of Bukit Mertajam town centre, as well as a network of canals and tributary streams. The drainage area of Sungai Juru covers much of Seberang Perai Tengah. The river passes through new residential developments such as Bandar Perda, as well as through the industrial areas of Bukit Minyak and Bukit Tengah.
Sungai Juru discharges into the Penang Channel at Kuala Juru, which is to the south of the Prai Industrial Estate. The estuarine village of Kuala Juru is located on the southern bank of the river near its mouth.
The Juru was mentioned in a 29 June, 1861, article in The Straits Times1. An excerpt reads:
The Juru is of the same character as the Pry, but the entrance is too shallow to admit vessels larger than cargo boats, while, on the other hand, the scenery is far less monotonous, as the river sweeps the base of two fine hills covered with verdure.
