Unlimited Rides on Rapid Penang? Get Pas Mutiara

If you ride the bus often in Penang, there's one thing you absolutely need to know: the Pas Mutiara My50 Travel Pass. This pass, introduced by Rapid Penang with support from the Penang State Government, offers unlimited rides for 30 consecutive days at an unbelievably low cost. In fact, thanks to state subsidies, you only need to pay RM10 one time to get started. After that, you simply renew it every month for free as long as the subsidy continues1.

What is Pas Mutiara My50?

The Pas Mutiara My50 Travel Pass is a monthly unlimited ride pass for all Rapid Penang buses across the state. It was launched as part of a federal initiative called My50, but in Penang, the state government stepped in to fully subsidise the cost, making it essentially free for daily commuters2. (FYI, I do not know why it's called that, but the "My50" has nothing to do with the price of the pass.)

When you first apply, you'll pay just RM10, which covers the RM5 processing fee for the card and RM5 purse value (usable for non-pass transactions). After that, all you need to do is renew it every month at any kiosk. For now, you don't have to pay anything for renewals as the state subsidy covers it entirely.

Who is Eligible?

The Pas Mutiara is available to all Malaysians who use Rapid Penang buses. There are no restrictions on age, income level, or employment status. Whether you are a student, working adult, retiree, or even a frequent traveller commuting within Penang, you can enjoy unlimited rides.

Step-by-Step Guide to Getting and Using Pas Mutiara

Applying for and using the pass is simple. Here's how:

  1. Apply for the card: Visit any Rapid Penang kiosk or counter. Bring along your MyKad or other valid Malaysian ID.
  2. Pay RM10: This one-time payment covers card processing (RM5) plus purse value (RM5).
  3. Activate your pass: Once issued, the card is valid immediately for unlimited rides for 30 days.
  4. Renew monthly: After the first month, go to any kiosk and renew your pass. No extra payment is required under the subsidy scheme.
  5. Tap and ride: Use the card on all Rapid Penang buses by tapping at the entrance reader. You need to tap out before alighting, because if you don't do that, the amount deducted from your card is not returned. This would prevent you from using the card again because you need to maintain a purse value of RM5 in order to continue using it. Unlimited rides apply until the 30-day period ends.

How to check the purse value on your card

To check the balance or date of card expiry, do not tap the card. Look for the "i" at the centre of the scanner. Use your finger to press it. Then you will be instructed to tap the card, and from there, you can see the balance and expiry date.

Where to Apply and Renew

You can apply for and renew the Pas Mutiara at the following locations:

Renewals are quick – usually under five minutes. Just present your card and ask for renewal.

How Much Can You Save?

The cost savings with Pas Mutiara are enormous. Without the pass, normal Rapid Penang fares range between RM1.40 and RM4.00 per trip, depending on distance3.

Example Calculation

Let's say you take 2 trips per day (to work and back home):

With the Pas Mutiara, your monthly cost is RM0 (after the first RM10 sign-up). That's a savings of over RM100 per month for daily commuters. If you travel even more often – say four or six trips a day – the savings grow exponentially.

Fun Fact

Did you know that Penang is the only state in Malaysia where the My50 pass is fully subsidised for locals? In other states, commuters still pay RM50 each month, but in Penang, it's free after the initial RM10. This makes Penang one of the most affordable places in Malaysia for public transport users4.

Tips for Using Pas Mutiara

Why the Pas Mutiara is a Game-Changer

The introduction of the Pas Mutiara represents a huge shift in mobility for Penang. For locals, it reduces the cost of commuting, encourages more people to use buses instead of private cars, and helps ease traffic congestion. For visitors who stay in Penang longer-term, it provides an unbeatable value way of exploring the island and mainland without worrying about transport costs.
