If you ride the bus often in Penang, there's one thing you absolutely need to know: the Pas Mutiara My50 Travel Pass. This pass, introduced by Rapid Penang with support from the Penang State Government, offers unlimited rides for 30 consecutive days at an unbelievably low cost. In fact, thanks to state subsidies, you only need to pay RM10 one time to get started. After that, you simply renew it every month for free as long as the subsidy continues1.
The Pas Mutiara My50 Travel Pass is a monthly unlimited ride pass for all Rapid Penang buses across the state. It was launched as part of a federal initiative called My50, but in Penang, the state government stepped in to fully subsidise the cost, making it essentially free for daily commuters2. (FYI, I do not know why it's called that, but the "My50" has nothing to do with the price of the pass.)
When you first apply, you'll pay just RM10, which covers the RM5 processing fee for the card and RM5 purse value (usable for non-pass transactions). After that, all you need to do is renew it every month at any kiosk. For now, you don't have to pay anything for renewals as the state subsidy covers it entirely.

The Pas Mutiara is available to all Malaysians who use Rapid Penang buses. There are no restrictions on age, income level, or employment status. Whether you are a student, working adult, retiree, or even a frequent traveller commuting within Penang, you can enjoy unlimited rides.
Applying for and using the pass is simple. Here's how:
To check the balance or date of card expiry, do not tap the card. Look for the "i" at the centre of the scanner. Use your finger to press it. Then you will be instructed to tap the card, and from there, you can see the balance and expiry date.

You can apply for and renew the Pas Mutiara at the following locations:
Renewals are quick – usually under five minutes. Just present your card and ask for renewal.
The cost savings with Pas Mutiara are enormous. Without the pass, normal Rapid Penang fares range between RM1.40 and RM4.00 per trip, depending on distance3.
Let's say you take 2 trips per day (to work and back home):
With the Pas Mutiara, your monthly cost is RM0 (after the first RM10 sign-up). That's a savings of over RM100 per month for daily commuters. If you travel even more often – say four or six trips a day – the savings grow exponentially.
Did you know that Penang is the only state in Malaysia where the My50 pass is fully subsidised for locals? In other states, commuters still pay RM50 each month, but in Penang, it's free after the initial RM10. This makes Penang one of the most affordable places in Malaysia for public transport users4.
The introduction of the Pas Mutiara represents a huge shift in mobility for Penang. For locals, it reduces the cost of commuting, encourages more people to use buses instead of private cars, and helps ease traffic congestion. For visitors who stay in Penang longer-term, it provides an unbeatable value way of exploring the island and mainland without worrying about transport costs.
