The name Batu Gantong itself, which means "hanging rock" refers to a boulder suspended precariously on the hill slope. The name is also adopted by famous 19th century Baba-Malay novelist Chan Kim Boon (1851-1920), who wrote under the pseudonym of Batu Gantong. Said to be born in the Batu Gantong village, Chan eventually moved to town, and had his home at 75 Muntri Street.
The Batu Gantong neighbourhood straddles George Town and Ayer Itam. By my own assessment, George Town is to the east of Jalan Lumba Kuda, while Ayer Itam to the west. Batu Gantong is just 5 km from Komtar, so it is a good distance for people working in the city. However, much of the land in Batu Gantong has already been occupied by either development, the Batu Gantong Cemetery or the Penang Turf Club.
