The Kampung Baru stretch of Jalan Air Itam (9 September 2012)
Kampung Baru, which means new village, is a settlement along Jalan Air Itam, Penang. Although today it is an older part of Air Itam, which follows Jalan Air Itam eastwards until the junction with York Road, where Dato Kramat Road starts, Kampung Baru was one of the "new" developments outside the village of Air Itam. The Malay village in the area, now known as Kampung Melayu, has been around since the late 19th century. As you drive along Jalan Air Itam, you will get to see some of the older village houses still standing today.
The development of Kampung Baru began in earnest in the mid 20th century. This was when the Late Art Deco- and Early Modern- style shophouses were constructed along both sides of the road. This was the result of the early urban sprawl of George Town moving west to meet the development from Air Itam Village moving east. The western end of Kampung Baru is anchored by the Kampung Baru Market, while the eastern end by the Air Itam Roundabout.
Jalan Air Itam is the main thoroughfare through Kampung Baru Air Itam. Needless to say, the road sees heavy traffic throughout the day. Although widened to four lanes, it still sees regular jams building up during the rush hours.
