Retail Paradise Sculpture, Campbell Street, George Town, Penang (8 February 2013)

The
"Retail Paradise" Sculpture (GPS: 5.41757, 100.33433) is one of the steel-rod sculptures installed in George Town in 2013. It is located on the wall of a shophouse facing an alleyway in Campbell Street. The sculpture is based on a caricature by cartoonist
Reggie Lee.
The "Retail Paradise" Sculpture depicts a guard apprehending a burglar, who pretended he was not breaking in, but had simply misplaced his keys. The sculpture celebrates a period in the history of Campbell Street, when it was the main shopping area of George Town. This was from the mid 1950s to the late 1970s, before modern air-conditioned shopping malls drew customers away from the area. Since then, the business along Campbell Streets has evolved, with many of the retail outlets now replaced by apparel wholesalers.
