Lone Pine, Penang, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel (1 March 2025)
Lone Pine, Penang, A Tribute Portfolio Resort (GPS: 5.476217, 100.249976), or simply Lone Pine Hotel, is a luxury boutique hotel in Batu Ferringhi, Penang. It is one of the earliest hotels to grace the Feringghi tourist belt. Lone Pine began when Australian physician Dr Albert S. McKern decided to turn a seaside bungalow into an inn. He somehow mistook a lone casuarina tree on the premises for a pine tree, and hence gave the property the name The Lone Pine Hotel.
From a humble beginning with ten rooms, Lone Pine expanded into a full-fledged hotel by the 1950s. To accommodate more guests, it constructed two annexes which added another sixteen rooms to the establishment.

Getting there
Bus: You can reach Lone Pine from the airport by bus, but it may take you an hour or more for the journey. From the airport, take Rapid Penang bus 102.
Taxi: It will certainly be more convenient to take the taxi. The air port taxi fare list that I have, dated 1 July 2010, states that the fare is RM69.00. Unless it has increased (but I haven't the chance to update), that's the fare.
By the late 1980s, with changing tourism demands, Lone Pine fell into a slumber, and was given a new lease of life in 2010, when it came under the ownership of the E & O Group. With that, the hotel underwent a major facelift that brought it into alignment with 21st century guest expectations. In addition to the hotel facilities such as the swimming pool, spa and games room, it also caters to business travellers, with a boardroom-style meeting room.
Food and beverage outlets at Lone Pine Hotel are The Bungalow , Matsu Japanese Restaurant and batubar.
