1 Persiaran Gurney occupies a historic site. It is the site of Kapitan Cina Chung Thye Pin mansion. Chung Thye Phin is the last Kapitan Cina of Perak. His father is the equally imminent Kapitan Cina Chung Keng Quee, who built Hai Kee Chan, today known as Pinang Peranakan Mansion.
After Chung Thye Pin passed away in 1935, the property was sold and turned into a hotel, known as either Shanghai Hotel (and possibly also Nanking Hotel). It became a popular venue for hosting wedding banquets. The business was interrupted by the Second World War, during which the Japanese occupied the building, and was said to have imprisoned and tortured prisoners there.
The Shanghai Hotel resumed its business after the war, and continue until 1960, when it finally closed for good. The building was then demolished in 1964. Twenty years would pass before the grounds were redevelop with the first block of 1 Persiaran Gurney being built in 1984.
If you explore the grounds of 1 Persiaran Gurney today, you will come across remnants of the ruins of Chung Thye Pin's mansion, which has been purposely preserved for posterity. I have some photos on this page to show you. Although Chung Thye Phin's mansion is no longer standing, his holiday villa, known today as Relau Villa, is still standing, albeit in a forlorn, dilapidated state.
