Kapitan Chung Thye Phin's Tomb
Kapitan Chung Thye Phin's Tomb is a grand Chinese tomb in
Mount Erskine, Penang. Due to development over the decades, the tomb has been surrounded by the Tanjong Park housing estate, which borders it to the east and south sides. To the north of the tomb is a continuation of the Mount Erskine Cemetery.
The tomb of Kapitan Chung Thye Phin is a mausoleum to the last Kapitan Cina of Perak, who is also the last Kapitan of British Malaya. He had two wives who were buried on his left and on his right. Closeby is another grave, which I am not sure belonging to whom.
I visited the Kapitan's tomb on 21 July 2025. Thanks to directions provided by Mr Jeffrey Seow, the grandson of the Kapitan, I was able to trace the location to Taman Tanjong 2. However, the moment I got out of the car, I was greeted with the ferocious barking of dogs. There was a lady outside her house, and I asked her if she knew the whereabouts of the tomb. The kind lady took me to the site, which is in fact behind her house. With her presence, the dogs did not disturb me, and I was able to check out the tomb, to take photos and videos of it.
In Penang, perhaps the most famous - though unfortunately not accessible - structure associated with Chung Thye Phin is his holiday villa,
Relau Villa.
