15 China Street, George Town (15 September 2012)

15 China Street is a well-preserved mid-19th century shophouse in George Town, Penang. It stretches across from China Street to No. 4 Che Em Lane. At the time I viewed it (Oct 2012), it appeared to be awaiting restoration. The ground floor is fenced up and a curtain blind shielded part of the façade.

15 China Street appears to be in a remarkably well preserved state, though badly needing restoration. This grand 3-storey shophouse preserves the full-length timber shutters on its second and third floor.

Under the eaves I can see what was once chien-nien broken bowl ornamentation, now painted over. The gable of 15 China Street is ornamented with a ceramic gable pendant. The area under the third-floor windows are filled with cast-iron lattice-work. On the wall of the third floor is a side window with wooden awnings.
