Seberang Jaya (GPS: 5.39522, 100.39924) is a township in Seberang Perai. It is part of Perai, and is to the northeast of Perai proper. The township was developed in the 1970s, when the state government was under the late Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu, to provide housing for workers in the neighbourhood factories, just as the Perai and Mak Mandin industrial estates were being espanded.
Since its founding, Seberang Jaya has grown to become a major town on Penang Mainland, second perhaps only to Bukit Mertajam. Its proximity to the Penang Bridge also makes Seberang Jaya an ideal location for those working on Penang Island. There are several hypermarkets and shopping malls in Seberang Jaya including including Aeon Big, Tesco Extra and Sunway Carnival, to name a few. The State Seat of Seberang Jaya is, as of 2015, represented by state assemblyman Afif Bahardin of PKR, under the federal constitency of Permatang Pauh.
