"Waterway" Sculpture, Prangin Road Ghaut, George Town

Waterway is a steel-road sculpture installed on a wall facing Prangin Road Ghaut, near the junction with Beach Street, in George Town, Penang. The sculpture based on caricature by Reggie Lee depicts a fruit and vegetable vendor serenading his lover from his boat, without know that she is already someone else's wife.

The "Waterway" Sculpture celebrates the Prangin Canal, once the most important waterway in Penang. The canal began life as the Prangin River which once meandered from the wetlands to empty into the South Channel. It was later canalized and by the turn of the 20th century became the most important wholesale market area in George Town. The importance of this canal has long past, but its history is remembered with this sculpture, based on a caricature by Reggie Lee.
