The Ayira Vaisyar merchants trace their backgrounds to Tamil Nadu, India. Their principal temple in Penang is the Sri Menakshi Sundraeswar along Jalan Kebun Bunga.
The main activity of the Ayira Vaisyar community is in the recycling. Indeed they can be regarded as the pioneers of recycling programmes in Penang. Due to this activity, particularly the collecting of used beverage bottles, they came to be known in Penang as the Bottle Chettiars.
