Brown Garden is a neighbourhood in Gelugor. It was named after the original landlord of the Brown Estate, David Brown, who was the largest landowner on Penang Island. Brown Garden was developed in the early 1960's to house government servants. Much of the neighbourhood is comprise housing for the civil workforce. The neighbourhood is bordered by Bukit Gelugor to the north, Sungai Gelugor to the east, Minden Heights to the south and Bukit Gambier to the west.
There are three main road names at Brown Garden: Jalan Permai, Jalan Molek and Jalan Endah. They are derived from three adjectives in Malay. Permai means peaceful, molek means adorable and endah is the old spelling for indah meaning beautiful place.
Brown Garden is served by Rapid Penang bus 302 that pass through Hilir Pemancar, the main road in the neighbourhood. It is 7.9 km from Komtar, making it of moderate distance from the city centre.
Discounting the traffic along Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, the traffic in Brown Garden itself is moderate. The only bottleneck is at the Hilir Pemancar junction with Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, which gets quite congested during rush hour.
