St Joachim Hall (former St Anne Church)

St Joachim Hall, Bukit Mertajam (23 August 2008)


St Joachim Hall (GPS: 5.35602, 100.46752) is a former Catholic church building in Bukit Mertajam. It is located along Jalan Kulim, the same road that leads to the St Anne Sanctuary (the complex that includes the present Church of St Anne as well as the Shrine of St Anne), next to it is SRJK Kim Sen.

St Joachim Hall was originally built for the St Anne Church in 1957. It is the fourth church building of St Anne in Bukit Mertajam. At that time, the site of the original St Anne Church had become out of bounds due to Communist threat. This church building was used by the Catholic parishers until the late 1970s, when the Emergency was lifted, and they were able to return to the original site.

Since then, the building is no longer used for church, and so was given the name St Joachim Hall.

There is a bus stop in front of the Old St Anne Church. It is served by Rapid Penang bus 709.
