Seven Terraces, Stewart Lane, George Town (5 February 2013)
Macalister Mansion (GPS: 5.415556, 100.335356) is a luxurious boutique hotel along Macalister Road in George Town, Penang. It opened for business in 2012, the hotel is housed in a sprawling early 20th century Chinese mansion, or ang3mor3lau2.
Macalister Mansion offers eight exquisite rooms. Facilities include a swimming pool with pool side bar, a dining room, a bar and a den. On the compound is a stylized bust (probably based on the Francis Light statue ... could have been the likeness of George Washington!) The name Macalister Mansion was chosen for the street it is located, and also in memory of Sir Norman Macalister, one of the British Governors of Penang.

Macalister Mansion joins a whole list of boutique hotels that have sprouted up in Penang is the past few years, in the wake the inscription of George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site. I am happy to see the attention given to this otherwise aged mansion. At the same time I am wondering aloud whether George Town is capable of supporting this influx of upscale accommodation providers.
