Hospital Bukit Mertajam (GPS: 5.35986, 100.46463) is the public general hospital for the people in Bukit Mertajam. It occupies a large piece of land along Jalan Kulim.
Hospital Bukit Mertajam has expanded a number of times since its founding on 1 October, 1890.1 In the beginning the hospital only had four wards and a total of 52 beds. It offered general medical attention and gynaecology. The initial expansion of the hospital was carried out within a year of its opening, and by 1892, the number of beds have been increased to seventy. The number continued to increase, and by 1995, it was a specialist hospital with a total of 450 beds. However with the opening of Hospital Seberang Jaya, the number of beds were reduced to 242 and it became a non-specialist hospital.
