Taman Manggis (GPS: 5.4182, 100.32626) is an area in George Town bounded by Burmah Road, Jalan Zainul Abidin and Lorong Selamat. Originally part of a Malay village, a continuation of the Malay settlement from Hutton Lane, it was developed in the mid-20th century into linked quarters to house government servants.
In the past decade, the houses at the 4.93-acre Taman Manggis were demolished for redevelopment. The first phase was completed around 2009 with an 18-storey block of low-medium cost apartments, called PRR Taman Manggis. The balance part of Taman Manggis land fronting Burmah Road has not yet been developed, at time of writing (July 2012). According to news reports, the state government and the state opposition parties were in grave disagreement over the use of that land.
