St John Ambulance of Malaysia, Penang branch, is located at Wisma St John Ambulans on Grove Road, Penang, next to the Malaysian Red Crescent Penang Branch. St John Ambulance of Malaysia is one of the many organisations affiliated to the St John Ambulance Association of England and the Islands which traces its origin to the Knights of Malta living in France in the 1820.
The present St John Ambulance of Malaysia is a self-funding not-for-profit organisation with some 6,000 volunteers in Penang, representing 10% of its volunteer force nationwide. It carries out various charitable activities and community services such as providing emergency as well as non-emergency ambulance services, setting up haemodialysis centres and nursing homes for the underprivileged.
The St John Ambulance Brigade, Penang, traces its history to the formation of the first Ambulance Cadet Division in 1938. With the onset of the Second World War, volunteers from the St John Ambulance Brigade were drafted into the Medical Auxiliary Services. It was the only voluntary organization in the country offering first aid medical attention during the duration of the war.
The St John Ambulance headquarters building has undergone several phases of expansion. The present four-storey complex, called Wisma St John Ambulans, was completed in 2005 and was officiated by the present Governor of Penang, Tun Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Abbas, on 3 July of the same year.
