Rock World

Rock World, George Town, Penang (30 August 2012)


Rock World is a nightspot in the heart of George Town, Penang. It is located on Drury Lane off Campbell Street. The discotheque is housed in a restored Art Deco building that originally housed the New Theatre, which once served as theatre and cinema for a wide range of entertainment, ranging from stage shows to movies to matinees and even Chinese opera.

New Theatre saw a decline in its audience when people began buying television sets and turning away from live opera. The stayed relevant for a few more decades as a movie theatre, but could not hold back the tide of time, a fate that fell on other early 20th century theatres in George Town. It reinvented itself as Rock World a number of years ago, but is today (as of September 2012) up for sale once again. So only time will tell what will be its next incarnation.

Getting there

The nearest bus stop is along Penang Road. The bus stop is served by Rapid Penang bus 11, 101, 103, 104, 201, 202, 203, 204, 206, 502 and CAT.
