Bukit Mertajam (GPS: 5.36552, 100.46056), (Jawi: بوکيت مرتاجم; Traditional/Simplified Chinese: 大山脚; Pinyin: Dà Shān Jiǎo; Penang Hokkien: Tua33 Snua3 Kha1) is a major town in Seberang Perai Tengah. It is the final stop of the train before arriving at Butterworth. The name Bukit Mertajam comes from the hill that is located behind the town. The hill itself was named after Mertajam, Erioglossum rubiginosum, a tree with white flowers that can reach a height of 5-12 meters.
Traditionally, Bukit Mertajam was a farming settlement inhabited mainly by Chinese of Teochew and Hakka descent. Bukit Mertajam is the site for the biggest Catholic pilgrimage in Malaysia. Encroaching urbanization has seen rapid development to this township.
The Parliamentary Seat of Bukit Mertajam is, as of 2015, represented by Member of Parliament Steven Sim Chee Keong of DAP. It comprises three state seats namely Berapit, Machang Bubok and Padang Lalang.
