Bukit Mertajam, Seberang Perai
Bukit Mertajam is a major town in Seberang Perai Tengah. It is the final stop of the train before arriving at Butterworth. The name Bukit Mertajam comes from the hill that is located behind the town. The hill itself was named after Mertajam, Erioglossum rubiginosum, a tree with white flowers that can reach a height of 5-12 meters.
Traditionally, Bukit Mertajam was a farming settlement inhabited mainly by Chinese of Teochew and Hakka descent. Bukit Mertajam is the site for the biggest Catholic pilgrimage in Malaysia. Encroaching urbanization has seen rapid development to this township.
