The North-East Region (Simplified Chinese: 东北区, Traditional Chinese: 東北區, Pinyin: Dōngběi Qū, Malay: Wilayah Timur Laut, Tamil: வடகிழக்கு பகுதி) is one of the five official regions of Singapore. Covering an area of about 103.9 square kilometres, it is the second most populous region in the country. The North-East Region is home to a mix of vibrant residential towns, major industrial estates, waterfront parks, and historic landmarks. It has experienced rapid development since the 1990s, transforming from a largely rural area into one of Singapore’s most modern urban landscapes.
In the past, the area now defined as the North-East Region was home to fishing villages, rubber plantations, and kampongs. Towns such as Hougang, Punggol, and Serangoon were known for their rural character, while Sengkang and Punggol were dotted with pig farms and vegetable plots. Since the late 20th century, large-scale Housing and Development Board (HDB) projects and urban planning by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) have completely reshaped the region into a dynamic mix of residential and industrial uses. Today, it is one of Singapore’s fastest-growing regions, particularly attractive to young families and professionals.
The North-East Region covers much of the northeastern part of Singapore. It is bordered by the North Region to the west, the Central Region to the south, and the Singapore Strait to the east. The region includes both mainland Singapore and several islands, including Coney Island and Pulau Ubin.
The North-East Region is made up of seven planning areas, each with distinct characteristics:
The region is well connected by public transport, especially via the North East MRT Line, which runs from HarbourFront through Serangoon, Hougang, Sengkang, and Punggol. In addition, the Cross Island Line, currently under construction, will further enhance connectivity across the region when completed. Major expressways such as the Tampines Expressway (TPE), Seletar Expressway (SLE), and Central Expressway (CTE) also serve the area, providing links to the rest of Singapore.
The North-East Region is dominated by HDB new towns such as Sengkang and Punggol, which are among the youngest in Singapore. These towns feature modern housing estates, integrated shopping centres, and extensive recreational facilities. Private housing, including condominiums and landed properties, can be found in Ang Mo Kio, Serangoon, and parts of Hougang. The rapid pace of development has made the region especially popular among young families seeking affordable yet modern homes.
While mainly residential, the North-East Region also hosts significant industrial estates. Seletar is home to Seletar Aerospace Park, a key hub for the aviation industry, while parts of Ang Mo Kio and Hougang contain light industrial zones. Additionally, the North-Eastern Islands, especially Pulau Ubin, continue to play an important role in heritage conservation and eco-tourism, rather than industrial use.
The North-East Region is known for its youthful, family-friendly atmosphere. Town planning emphasises accessibility to green spaces, sports complexes, and waterfront parks. Recreational trails along Sungei Punggol, Sungei Serangoon, and Coney Island link neighbourhoods together while promoting an active lifestyle. With an abundance of schools, community clubs, and shopping centres, the region continues to attract new residents each year.
