Why Take the 101?
The 101 bus is the best option for those who want a budget-friendly way to reach Penang’s northern beaches and attractions. A taxi or e-hailing ride can cost significantly more, while the 101 allows passengers to travel the entire route for just a few ringgit. It is particularly popular with backpackers and day-trippers heading to Batu Ferringhi or the national park.
Operating Hours
Bus 101 runs from 5:30am to 11:30pm daily. First bus from Jetty and from Teluk Bahang leave their respective terminals at 5:30am.
Frequency
Based on plan, there is supposed to be a bus every 10 to 12 minutes.
Fares and How to Pay
As with other Rapid Penang buses, fares on the 101 are based on distance. As of 2025, the fare structure is generally:
- Short distance: RM1.40
- Medium distance: RM2.00 – RM2.70
- Long distance (George Town to Teluk Bahang): Around RM4.002
Payment methods include:
- Cash: Exact fare only – drivers do not give change.
- Pas Mutiara: A heavily subsidised monthly travel pass offering unlimited bus rides for just RM10 on initial sign-up3.
Travel Tips for Taking Bus 101
- Sit on the left side of the bus when heading north for the best sea views along the coastal road.
- The bus is frequently used by tourists, especially in the afternoons and evenings, so expect some crowding during peak hours.
- For Batu Ferringhi’s famous night market, board the 101 in George Town around 6.00 pm to arrive in time.
- If heading to Penang National Park, start your journey early in the morning to maximise time for hiking or visiting Entopia.
- Traffic along the coastal stretch can be slow, especially on weekends, so factor in extra travel time.
