Magazine Road in George Town, Penang (19 November 2021)
Magazine Road (Malay: Jalan Magazine; Traditional Chinese: 頭條路, Simplified Chinese: 头条路, Pinyin: Tóutiáo Lù; Penang Hokkien Tai1ji33: Thau3 Tiau3 Lor33; POJ: Thâu-tiâu-lō͘, Tâi-lô: Thâu-tiâu-lōo) is a major road in George Town, Penang. It is the first of originally seven parallel roads after the Prangin Canal. For that reason, it is known in Penang Hokkien as Thau3 Tiau3 Lor33 which means "First Road". That is short for "Thau3-Tiau3 Lor33 Koay1 Kang3nga4" or "first road after the river" (or, Koay1 Kang3nga4 Thau3-Tiau3 Lor33). The "river" in question refers to the Prangin Canal, which was a river before it was canalised.
Magazine Road is the first road within the Seven Streets Precinct. The road connects Magazine Road Ghaut, at the intersection with Bridge Street, to Magazine Circus. Magazine Circus, or Simpang Enam, is a five-corner junction that was originally a traffic circus where six streets meet. One of these streets, Gladstone Road, has since been expunged to make way for the Komtar development.
