The West Region (Simplified Chinese: 西区, Traditional Chinese: 西區, Pinyin: Xī Qū, Malay: Wilayah Barat, Tamil: மேற்கு பகுதி) is one of the five official regions of Singapore. It covers about 201.3 square kilometres, making it the largest in land area among the regions. As of 2020, the West Region has a population of approximately 922,540, the highest among all regions. It is a dynamic zone that balances large-scale industrial activities, residential estates, educational institutions, and recreational spaces, positioning itself as a crucial driver of Singapore’s long-term development.
The West Region has a long association with trade, agriculture, and industry. Historically, areas like Jurong were swamplands until the 1960s, when the government launched the massive Jurong Industrial Estate project to drive industrialisation. This transformed Singapore’s economy and turned the west into an industrial powerhouse. Over time, residential towns such as Jurong East, Jurong West, Clementi, and Bukit Batok were developed to house the growing workforce. Today, the West Region is undergoing further transformation, with the Jurong Lake District envisioned as Singapore’s “second CBD.”
Situated in the western part of Singapore, the West Region is bounded by the North Region to the north, the Central Region to the east, and the Straits of Johor to the west and south. Its expansive territory accommodates a wide range of land uses, from dense housing estates to lush nature reserves and world-class industrial estates.
The West Region consists of 12 planning areas, the largest number among Singapore’s regions:
The West Region is well served by expressways such as the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE), Pan Island Expressway (PIE), and Kranji Expressway (KJE), connecting it seamlessly to other regions. The East West MRT Line runs through major towns like Jurong East, Clementi, and Boon Lay, while the North South Line serves Bukit Batok, Bukit Gombak, and Choa Chu Kang. The upcoming Jurong Region Line and Cross Island Line will further enhance connectivity, particularly around Jurong and Tengah.
The West Region hosts a mix of new and mature towns, providing a wide variety of housing options. Jurong East is home to modern condominiums near Jurong Gateway, while Bukit Batok and Clementi feature a mix of HDB flats and landed properties. Tengah, currently under phased development, is envisioned as Singapore’s first “forest town.” As of 2025, resale HDB flats in the West Region generally cost between SGD 450,000 and 620,000 for 4-room units, while private condominiums average around SGD 1,350–1,750 per square foot (14,531–18,836 per sq m). Rentals for 3-bedroom units typically range from SGD 3,000 to 4,500 per month, depending on location and amenities.
The West Region is Singapore’s industrial backbone. Jurong Industrial Estate and Tuas host petrochemical, manufacturing, and logistics industries, as well as the upcoming Tuas Mega Port, which will be the world’s largest fully automated port upon completion. Clementi and Bukit Timah, by contrast, are known for their educational institutions, including the National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore Polytechnic, and international schools, cementing the region’s role as an academic hub.
The West Region offers a diverse lifestyle mix. From bustling shopping malls such as JEM, Westgate, and IMM in Jurong East, to quieter neighbourhood hubs in Bukit Batok and Clementi, the region caters to different needs. Green corridors and waterfronts provide ample space for recreation, while its educational cluster attracts students and academics from across the world. Community spirit remains strong, supported by numerous town councils, community clubs, and grassroots organisations.
