Orchard Planning Area, Singapore


The Orchard Planning Area (Simplified Chinese: 乌节, Traditional Chinese: 烏節, Pinyin: Wūjié, Malay: Orchard, Tamil: ஆர்ச்சர்ட்) is located in the Central Region of Singapore. Covering a small area of about 0.78 square kilometres, Orchard is world-renowned as the island nation’s premier shopping and lifestyle district. It is synonymous with Orchard Road, a 2.2 km boulevard lined with luxury malls, hotels, dining establishments, and entertainment venues.

Location and Boundaries

Orchard is situated just north of the Downtown Core, and is bordered by Newton to the north, Tanglin to the west, River Valley to the south, and Museum to the east. Despite its small size, its strategic location makes Orchard a central node of activity in Singapore.

History of Orchard

Orchard Road was once a quiet country lane lined with fruit orchards, nutmeg plantations, and pepper farms—hence its name. In the late 19th century, it began transforming with the establishment of homes, institutions, and markets. From the mid-20th century, Orchard rapidly evolved into Singapore’s leading shopping belt, attracting both locals and tourists.

Today, Orchard Planning Area represents the epitome of Singapore’s retail and hospitality industry, blending heritage sites with modern skyscrapers and shopping complexes.

Characteristics of Orchard

Orchard is primarily a commercial district, with an extremely high concentration of retail malls, five-star hotels, serviced apartments, embassies, and entertainment outlets. Residential properties exist mainly in the Cairnhill subzone and in luxury apartments along Orchard Boulevard and Scotts Road. The population density is relatively low compared to other central planning areas, as commercial use dominates the landscape.
