Introducing Penang Food
The term "hawker food" is street food sold by the roadside. Penang has developed hawker food to an art and has exported it to other states in Malaysia. Penang hawker food has even found its way farther afield, wherever Penang folks decide to settle. Australia, England, California, New York are just some of the places where Penang hawker food can now be found. But to taste authentic Penang hawker food, one has to come to Penang itself.
Penang people are consciously aware of the status of their street food. Although there is tasty food to be found elsewhere in Malaysia, it is a waste of time arguing with a Penang person over the question of where to get the best hawker food. Every true Penang person regard it as almost his birthright to claim that Penang hawker food is best.
The term "hawker food" itself is today a misnomer, as now all them are found by the roadside. More often than not, the best hawker food is found in coffee shops. To get the best hawker food in Penang, you do need to know where to look. On this page, I list out all the coffee shops as well as street stalls in Penang, and mark out what food is recommended there.
On the list below, I itemize all the famous food of Penang, so that you can get well acquainted with them. Each thumbnail below links to its own page. The hawker food in Penang may appear and taste differently from the same thing in a different state. For example, Penang-style "Laksa" and "Chee Cheong Fun" are totally different from what you would get in another state. Similarly, ordering "Hokkien Mee" in Penang will being a different item than in Kuala Lumpur. I am building this list of hawker food, with photographs, so that you have an idea how it looks like, and what is its expected taste. When described below, all food items refers to the "Penang" version. Hence, "Laksa" refers to Penang Laksa. Non-Penang versions are not included here (I may do a travel tip of that destination in future and add them in). Penang durian, which actually is in a class of its own, is also included here, as it is also considered Penang's treasured food item. Also included are beverages such as cendol and ais kacang.
