Thailand is divided into 76 provinces, called changwat (จังหวัด ). These are grouped into five regions, namely Central, Western, Northern, Northeastern, Eastern and Southern Thailand. The Central Region has the most provinces, with twenty-two, followed by the Northeastern Region with nineteen. The Western Region has the fewest provinces, with only five while the Northeastern has seven. In addition, Bangkok and Pattaya are special governed districts, of which Bangkok enjoys provincial level status.
