Nakhon Pathom Province จังหวัดนครปฐม

Nakhon Pathom Province จังหวัดนครปฐม is a province in the Central Region of Thailand. The provincial capital, Nakhon Pathom Town is about 56 km from Bangkok, located on the Tha Chin River, a tributary of the Chao Phraya River. Today the urban sprawl of Bangkok has reached into Nakhon Pathom.

Nakhon Pathom Province is bordered by Suphanburi Province to the north, Ayutthaya Province to the northeast, Nonthaburi Province to the east, Bangkok to the southeast, Samut Sakhon Province to the south, Ratchaburi Province to the west, and Kanchanaburi Province to the northwest.

Nakhon Pathom Province covers 2,168 sq km (837 sq mi) and has a population of 866,000 people. It ranks 65th in size and 26th in population. It is also the 8th most densely populated province in Thailand.

Nakhon Pathom is believed to be the cradle of Thai Buddhism. Its name comes from the Pali language, where Nagara Pathama (as in the Malay, "negara pertama") means "first city". According to archaeological excavation, it was the site where the Dvaravati Kingdom was established back in the 11th century.

To commemorate this, King Mongkut commissioned the construction of the Phra Pathom Chedi. Completed during the reign of King Chulalongkorn in 1870, it is today still the tallest stupa in the world, standing at a height of 127 meters (417 ft). It stands on the site of the first stupa dating to AD 675, or according to archaeological findings, around the 4th century.

Nakhon Pathom Province is divided into 7 districts (amphoe) which are Mueang Nakhon Pathom (Nakhon Pathom Town), Kamphaeng Saen, Nakhon Chai Si, Don Tum, Bang Len, Sam Phran and Phutthamonthon. The districts are subdivided into 105 subdistricts (tambon) and 919 villages (muban).

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
