Bueng Kan Province จังหวัดบึงกาฬ is a province on the northeastern edge of Thailand. It covers 4,305 square kilometers and has a population of 408,000 people (2011 estimate).
Located in the Isan region, Bueng Kan Province was created out of a number of districts of Nong Khai Province namely Amphoe Bueng Kan, Amphoe Seka, Amphoe So Phisai, Amphoe Bung Khla, Amphoe Bueng Khong Long, Amphoe Pak Khat , Amphoe Phon Charoen and Amphoe Si Wilai. The idea to establish Bueng Kan Province was first raised in 1994, but a lapse of twenty years would pass before the Ministry of Interior renewed the project. A referendum was held that saw some 99% of the population of Nong Khai Province supporting the idea. The bill for the creation of the province was eventually approved on 7 February, 2011.
