Buangkok East Drive is a significant road in Singapore that serves as the eastern extension of Buangkok Drive. Measuring approximately 1.36 kilometres in length, it connects Buangkok Drive to the Tampines Road and the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE), thus forming an important vehicular link between Hougang, Sengkang, and the wider expressway network. Situated in postal District 19, the road also serves as a boundary marker separating the Hougang Planning Area from the Sengkang Planning Area. The nearest MRT station is Buangkok MRT Station (NE15) on the North East Line, offering convenient rail access to residents and commuters.
The development of Buangkok East Drive was part of broader infrastructure planning to enhance connectivity between Hougang and Sengkang during the late 1990s and early 2000s1. With rapid urbanisation in the northeast region, there was a need to improve links to the expressway network, especially the newly constructed KPE, which opened in phases from 2007 to 20082. Buangkok East Drive was gradually extended to join the KPE and Tampines Road, easing traffic congestion along Upper Serangoon Road and providing alternative access routes for new housing estates in Sengkang and Buangkok.
The name “Buangkok” is derived from a Malay term meaning “to bend” or “crooked,” referring to the winding nature of the original kampong paths in the area3. The name has been retained across several roads in the vicinity, including Buangkok Drive and Buangkok Green, to preserve the cultural heritage of the neighbourhood. Buangkok East Drive continues this naming tradition, signifying both continuity and identity in the fast-changing urban landscape.
Today, Buangkok East Drive functions as a busy arterial road with dual carriageways. It is flanked by Housing & Development Board (HDB) flats in Buangkok and new private residential developments in Sengkang. The street scene is defined by broad lanes, pedestrian walkways, landscaped verges, and bus stops strategically placed along its length. Despite its utilitarian purpose as a traffic corridor, the road benefits from greenery planted as part of the National Parks Board’s roadside greening initiative, giving commuters a more pleasant journey.
Buangkok East Drive serves as a connector to several major roads. To the west, it links with Buangkok Drive, which extends towards Yio Chu Kang Road. To the south, Tampines Road provides a direct route to Paya Lebar and Bedok, while to the east, the KPE offers express connections to the city and the eastern parts of Singapore. Nearby roads include Upper Serangoon Road and Hougang Avenue 3, which serve as local access routes into residential estates and commercial centres.
Although Buangkok East Drive itself is mainly a transport corridor, several points of interest are located in its vicinity:
The property market along Buangkok East Drive reflects the demand for suburban housing in the northeast region. As of 2024, HDB resale flats in the Buangkok and Hougang areas average between SGD 550 and SGD 650 per square foot4. A 1,000 sq ft (93 sq m) 4-room flat could fetch between SGD 550,000 and SGD 650,000. Meanwhile, private condominiums near Buangkok MRT average around SGD 1,800 to SGD 2,200 per square foot. This means a 1,200 sq ft (111 sq m) unit could cost between SGD 2.1 million and SGD 2.6 million. Rentals typically range from SGD 3,200 to SGD 4,500 per month, depending on size and condition. Compared with the island-wide condominium average of SGD 1,600 psf, Buangkok East Drive properties are slightly above average due to their connectivity and proximity to the KPE.
The nearest MRT station is Buangkok MRT Station (NE15) on the North East Line. From here, commuters can travel directly to Dhoby Ghaut, Chinatown, HarbourFront, and Punggol. In addition, the upcoming Cross Island Line will further enhance connectivity in the northeast, with potential interchange stations near Hougang.
Several bus stops are located along Buangkok East Drive, with services connecting Hougang, Sengkang, and Serangoon. These routes provide feeder links to Buangkok MRT and beyond, making public transport a viable alternative to driving.
One interesting fact about Buangkok East Drive is that it is among the few roads in Singapore that serve as a clear planning boundary line—separating two distinct planning areas: Hougang to the south and Sengkang to the north. This has influenced urban planning decisions, with developments on either side reflecting the identity and character of their respective towns.
