Bedok North Road is one of the longer arterial roads in eastern Singapore. Stretching about 4.5 km, it links Bartley Road East in the north to New Upper Changi Road in the south, traversing through the heart of the Bedok Planning Area. Located in District 16, it serves as a key local corridor for residents and commuters travelling across Bedok, connecting neighbourhood estates, schools, and green spaces. 1
Bedok North Road runs roughly north–south, acting as a spine road for the north Bedok precinct. On its northern end, it meets Bartley Road and Bartley Road East, while its southern terminus ties into New Upper Changi Road, which itself extends toward Changi Road and connects to East Coast Road. Parallel and intersecting roads include Bedok Reservoir Road, Bedok North Avenue 1, 2, and 3, as well as access points towards Pan Island Expressway (PIE) and Tampines Expressway (TPE). The road is also situated not far from estates in the Tampines Planning Area and Paya Lebar Planning Area.
Bedok North Road was developed in tandem with the urbanisation of Bedok in the 1970s and 1980s, during Singapore’s major public housing push. Initially, much of this area comprised rural kampongs and farmland. The Housing and Development Board (HDB) began transforming the region into a large residential town. Roads such as Bedok North Road were laid out to create strong connectivity between new residential blocks and expressways, ensuring efficient commuting to the city. 2
The name follows the logical grid of road naming in the Bedok township. “Bedok” is derived from the Malay word bedoh, a large drum once used to signal prayer times. “North” differentiates this stretch of the planning area from “South” roads closer to the coast. “Road” distinguishes it from Bedok North Avenues. In common English spelling, it is Bedok North Road, pronounced “beh-dok north road.” In the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), the pronunciation of “Bedok” is /bəˈdɒk/. 3
Bedok North Road has a predominantly residential character, with numerous HDB blocks lining its length. These include mature estates with convenient amenities such as wet markets, hawker centres, and neighbourhood shops. The road also runs near educational institutions, community facilities, and parks, adding to its vibrant but practical feel. Despite being busy during peak hours, Bedok North Road retains a community-focused, suburban charm.
The housing stock along Bedok North Road is dominated by HDB flats, many built in the late 1970s to 1980s. These flats tend to be larger in size compared to newer developments in other towns. Typical 4-room flats measure around 1,000 sq ft (93 m²), while executive maisonettes can reach 1,500 sq ft (139 m²). 4
As of mid-2025, resale prices in the Bedok North area generally range from:
Rental prices are also comparatively affordable in the eastern region. A typical 3-room HDB flat may rent for about S$2,200–S$2,600 per month, while 4-room flats can fetch S$2,800–S$3,500 monthly. These values are lower than those in central locations such as Novena or Bishan Planning Area, making Bedok North attractive for families seeking space at moderate prices. 5
There are no MRT stations directly on Bedok North Road. The closest is Bayshore MRT Station (TE29) on the Thomson-East Coast Line, which improves connectivity for residents in southern Bedok. Other nearby stations include Bedok MRT Station and Tanah Merah MRT Station on the East West Line. 6
Public bus services are plentiful along the road. Numerous bus stops line Bedok North Road, offering routes to Bedok Interchange, Tampines, and other parts of eastern Singapore. These stops are conveniently located near residential blocks and community amenities, making commuting straightforward for daily commuters.
For motorists, Bedok North Road offers quick access to the PIE and Bartley Road East, providing smooth links to central and northern parts of Singapore. The road is a popular north–south alternative route in the eastern region.
Bedok North Road runs close to Bedok Reservoir Park, which once served as a sand quarry before being converted into a reservoir in 1986. The park is now a beloved recreation area for dragon boat races and marathon events — a stark contrast to the industrial past of the area. 7
