Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 is one of the major arterial roads in the northeastern part of Singapore. Stretching about 5.2 kilometres, it runs from Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 in the west to Hougang Avenue 2 in the east. The road lies within Districts 19 and 20, traversing both the Ang Mo Kio Planning Area and the Serangoon Planning Area. It is a vibrant residential and community corridor lined with schools, parks, shops, and amenities that serve thousands of households.
The development of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 was part of the planning of Ang Mo Kio new town during the mid to late 1970s. Before the establishment of modern housing estates, this area consisted of kampongs (villages), small farms, and rubber plantations. The road was constructed to serve as one of the main east-west routes within the new town, connecting its western boundary to Hougang and providing access to older arterial roads such as Upper Serangoon Road. It played an important role in supporting the town’s growth into one of the most populous HDB estates in Singapore.
The term Ang Mo Kio has a few possible origins. One explanation is that it refers to the "red-haired man’s bridge," with "ang mo" meaning "red-haired" in Hokkien, a colloquial reference to Westerners, and "kio" meaning "bridge." Another theory suggests it may have been named after a local bridge associated with British engineers in the colonial era. The road’s name is pronounced as ahng moh kee-oh, with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) rendering as /ɑŋ moʊ kioʊ/.
Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 is lined with mature HDB blocks, schools, neighbourhood centres, and green spaces. The road captures the character of a typical Singaporean new town, where residential, commercial, and recreational elements coexist harmoniously. Along the western stretch, near Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1, the environment is dominated by older HDB blocks from the late 1970s, while the eastern section closer to Hougang reflects a more modern, urbanised atmosphere. The road is busy during peak hours but is supported by an efficient network of bus services.

A fun fact about Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 is that parts of it were once part of a pilot town planning scheme in the late 1970s, making Ang Mo Kio the first new town designed entirely with modern urban planning principles such as precincts and neighbourhood clusters. Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 was one of the showcase roads for this pioneering approach, which later influenced HDB town design across Singapore.
