Euston Square Station, London

Euston Square Station (GPS: 51.52544, -0.13553) is a London Underground station located along Euston Road in the London Borough of Camden. Situated in the heart of Fitzrovia, the station lies within Travelcard Zone 1 and serves as a key stop for passengers commuting through Central London.

Historical Background

The station was first opened on 10 January 1863 as part of the original Metropolitan Railway, the world’s first underground passenger railway. It was initially known simply as “Gower Street Station,” named after the nearby Gower Street. The current name, Euston Square, was adopted in 1909 to better reflect its proximity to Euston Square and Euston mainline station.

Despite several modernisation efforts, the station retains some of its historic character, with subtle nods to its Victorian past embedded within its contemporary design.

Station Design and Location

Euston Square Station is located beneath the northern carriageway of Euston Road, directly opposite University College Hospital. The entrance is integrated into the surrounding pavement infrastructure, with modern glass and steel canopies marking its access points. The station lacks a dedicated station building, and ticket machines and barriers are housed within underground concourses.

By road, the station is approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometres) north of Charing Cross, which is traditionally regarded as the centre of London. This location places it within easy walking distance of several educational institutions, hospitals, and cultural landmarks.
