College Avenue (Malay: Lebuhraya Maktab) is a road in the Pulau Tikus area of George Town. It connects Burmah Road to Kelawei Road, and passes through the residential area of College Square (Medan Maktab). College Avenue is today a one way street with traffic flow from Burmah Road to Kelawei Road, with College Lane being also one way in the other direction.
College Avenue was named after the College General, the Roman Catholic complex of seminaries and novitiate that was established by the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The land that was once occupied by College General is today the site of Gurney Plaza and Gurney Paragon. Perhaps the only remnant of the Roman Catholic heritage in the area is the St Joseph's Novitiate, a historic building that has been preserved and integrated into the Gurney Paragon complex.
College Avenue passes through land that was once part of the Eurasian village of Pulau Tikus. The Eurasian presence in the area has dwindled to just the Penang Eurasian Association, located on Lorong Serani. Other reminders of the Eurasians in Pulau Tikus include road names such as Leandro's Lane, and the Church of the Immaculate Conception, which though founded by the Eurasians, is very much under-represented by the community today.
