Komtar Bus Interchange, Penang

Komtar Bus Terminal (16 May 2008)

The Komtar Bus Interchange (GPS: 5.41408, 100.34157) is a major bus bus in George Town. Most of the buses from the Weld Quay Ferry & Bus Terminal will pass through here before branching off in separate directions.

At the Komtar Bus Interchange, you can catch buses going to the north, central, south and west parts of Penang Island, as well as some buses that go to the mainland. Right now the main bus operator in Penang is the government-owned Rapid Penang. The terminal is located along Tek Soon Street, although buses approach it via Jalan Ria and they emerge from the terminal into Jalan Ria once more.

Effective 18 November 2009, buses are segregated according to destination. Lane One is for buses to Teluk Bahang, Lane Two to the Penang Botanic Gardens and Air Itam, Lane Three to Farlim and Paya Terubong, Lane Four to Bayan Baru and Sungai Ara, and Lane Five to Balik Pulau, Batu Maung and Butterworth. Buses are only allowed to drop and pick up passengers; they are not allowed to wait for more than five minutes.

In addition to buses, commuters may also catch taxi from the taxi stands located beside Prangin Mall and those parked outside the ICT Digital Mall.

Getting there

Almost all the buses from the Weld Quay Ferry & Bus Terminal will pass by the Komtar Bus Terminal. In fact, it's easier to tell you which ones don't (stop there): 403, 404, 501 ... I can only think of three for now!
