Quick Facts

Name and Etymology

The name “Ang Mo Kio” is written in Chinese as 宏茂桥 (pinyin: Hóng Mào Qiáo). “Ang Mo Kio” in Hokkien literally translates as “red-haired bridge,” though the etymology remains debated. Some suggest it refers to a bridge built by Westerners (“red-haired” being a colloquial term for Caucasians), while others trace the origin to the presence of rambutan trees (ang mo dan in Hokkien) in the area. The Town Centre inherits this name as the core of the estate.

History

Ang Mo Kio Town Centre was developed in the late 1970s and 1980s as part of the Housing and Development Board’s (HDB) master plan to create self-sufficient new towns. The town centre was planned as the commercial and administrative hub, hosting retail outlets, wet markets, hawker centres, and community facilities. Over the decades, it has been progressively upgraded, including the opening of AMK Hub in 2007, which modernised the shopping experience for residents.
