Townsville is a compact but densely populated subzone within the Ang Mo Kio Planning Area in Singapore. Townsville is a residential heartland developed during the formative years of Ang Mo Kio New Town in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The subzone is dominated by HDB apartment blocks, many of which have undergone upgrading under the government’s renewal programmes. Shops, childcare centres, and healthcare facilities are interspersed within the estate, creating a self-sufficient neighbourhood environment despite its small geographical size.
Residents of Townsville benefit from good connectivity to other parts of Singapore. The subzone lies near Ang Mo Kio MRT Station on the North-South Line, and is also served by multiple bus services from the Ang Mo Kio Bus Interchange. For drivers, the Central Expressway (CTE) is easily accessible, providing fast links to downtown Singapore. Its southern border near Marymount also places it within reach of Circle Line connections.
Although compact, Townsville has a number of key facilities that support daily life:
The name Townsville is strongly associated with Townsville Primary School, one of the most recognisable institutions in the area. The subzone is widely known by residents of Ang Mo Kio, though like many official subzones, it may not always be used in everyday speech. Instead, people often simply refer to it as part of Ang Mo Kio. Nevertheless, Townsville maintains a distinct identity through its school and its dense, close-knit community character.
