Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 is a significant east–west arterial road in Singapore, connecting Upper Thomson Road in the west to Lorong Chuan in the east. Measuring approximately 4.5 km in length, the road lies within District 20. A substantial stretch of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 forms the boundary between the Ang Mo Kio Planning Area to the north and the Bishan Planning Area to the south, with its eastern end extending into the Serangoon Planning Area. This makes it an important thoroughfare linking several towns and estates across central Singapore.
The road begins at its western junction with Upper Thomson Road, just beside Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, and continues eastward, eventually meeting Lorong Chuan near Serangoon Garden. Along its length, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 intersects with other major routes such as Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 and Avenue 3, helping to connect the internal roads of Ang Mo Kio to the wider expressway system. The southern side of the road, closer to Bishan, is characterised by a mix of parks, schools, and residential developments, while the northern side largely comprises Ang Mo Kio’s public housing estates.
Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 was laid out in the mid-to-late 1970s as part of the construction of Ang Mo Kio New Town. At that time, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) developed a systematic grid of avenues and streets, departing from traditional Malay and colonial-era place names. Avenue 1 was among the earliest of these arterial roads, designed to facilitate both east–west movement within the new town and easy access to older settlements in Yio Chu Kang and Serangoon. Over the decades, as Bishan New Town was built in the 1980s, Avenue 1 assumed additional importance as the dividing line between the two towns.
The name Ang Mo Kio originates from the Hokkien phrase ang mo kio (紅毛橋), literally “red-haired bridge.” The “red-haired” term was a colloquial reference to Europeans during the colonial era, and “kio” means bridge. This name was applied to a bridge that once stood in the area. In the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), Ang Mo Kio is pronounced /ɑŋ moʊ kioʊ/. The numerical naming system, such as “Avenue 1,” was implemented by HDB in the 1970s to improve navigability in the new town, replacing older kampong-era toponyms.
Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 has a distinctly suburban character, with wide lanes, mature roadside trees, and pedestrian walkways on both sides. Its location at the edge of Ang Mo Kio means that it serves both as a connector and a boundary, separating the busy town centre from the calmer Bishan residential neighbourhoods. The presence of Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park along a large stretch of the road gives it a scenic, green quality, making it popular with joggers and cyclists. Traffic is typically steady but manageable, except during peak hours when commuters head towards Lorong Chuan and Serangoon Garden.
The property landscape along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 is diverse, ranging from HDB flats in Ang Mo Kio to private condominiums and landed properties closer to Bishan and Serangoon. As of 2025, average resale HDB prices in Ang Mo Kio are around SGD 560 per square foot (about SGD 6,000 per sq m)1. A typical 4-room flat of 1,000 sq ft (93 sq m) would cost about SGD 560,000–600,000 depending on age and location.
On the Bishan side, condominiums and landed homes command higher prices. Condos in the vicinity average between SGD 1,800 and SGD 2,100 per square foot2, meaning a 1,100 sq ft (102 sq m) unit could cost upwards of SGD 2 million. Rental rates in the area reflect these values: HDB flats fetch SGD 2,800–3,200 monthly, while condo rentals range between SGD 3,800 and SGD 5,500 depending on size and facilities.
The nearest MRT station to Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 is Ang Mo Kio MRT Station (NS16) on the North South Line. While not directly on the avenue itself, it is within short bus or bicycle distance. Future developments under the Cross Island Line are expected to enhance connectivity for residents in the area.
Several bus services ply along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1, with stops conveniently located along the road. These buses connect commuters to Bishan, Serangoon, Toa Payoh, and central Singapore, offering an alternative to MRT travel.
Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 runs alongside one of Singapore’s most ambitious park rejuvenation projects. The Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park used to be a utilitarian canal but was transformed in the early 2010s into a meandering, naturalised river. This made the park not only a recreational space but also an award-winning example of sustainable urban design. As a result, Avenue 1 offers one of the most scenic road journeys in the heartlands of Singapore.
