Jalan Dato' Ismail Hashim, in Sungai Ara (15 February 2013)
Jalan Dato' Ismail Hashim is a country road on the southern part of Penang Island. It runs from the junction with Jalan Tun Dr Awang in Relau to Bayan Lepaspekan. The road was formerly known as Jalan Sungai Ara.
According to feedback from a reader Dayana Wong on 18 July 2020, Jalan Dato' Ismail Hashim was named after a local assemblyman for Bayan Lepas who also served as a member of the Penang State executive committee. Dato' Ismail Hashim was the division head for UMNO in Bayan Lepas. He was the co-founder of Koperasi Tunas Muda and was responsible for spearheading the fund raising to acquire lands to develop Kampung Sungai Ara. His contribution included building affordable homes for the local Malays and Chinese, the local mosque Masjid Al-Huda and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sungai Ara. The information about Dato' Ismail Hashim is derived from the archives of Koperasi Tunas Muda.

Dato' Ismail Hashim was born in Jerlun, Kedah, in 1933. He passed away in 1996 due to a heart attack. With all due respect to Dato' Ismail Hashim, the naming of the road after him begs the question why the honour went to someone so remotely related to Penang - is there no local personality worthy of that honour? The only other call to fame is Dewan Dato' Ismail Hashim, the school hall at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sungai Ara. The school is located along Jalan Dato' Ismail Hashim.
