Free School Road was named after the Penang Free School, the oldest public schools in Malaysia. The school was relocated to this part of Penang Island in 1925. When the surrounding areas off Free School Road were developed, the new roads south of Penang Free School were named in honour of the headmasters of the school, among them W Hamilton (1925-1926), R.H. Pinhorn (1904-1925) and W. Hargreaves (1891-1904).
There are no public buses along Free School Road but Rapid Penang Bus 206 passes through Terengganu Road and Hamilton Road, while 11, 101, 104 and 304 pass through Perak Road.
