Old Bond Street, London

Elegant and historic, Old Bond Street links New Bond Street to Piccadilly and is famed for luxury shopping, Georgian heritage, and high-end real estate.

Old Bond Street is a short yet iconic street in the heart of the City of Westminster, London. Situated between New Bond Street to the north and Piccadilly to the south, it forms part of one of London’s most prestigious shopping and historical districts. With its timeless Georgian architecture and high-end boutiques, Old Bond Street embodies the elegance and exclusivity of Mayfair and St James’s.

Street Layout and Direction

Old Bond Street measures approximately 250 metres (820 feet) in length. It runs in a straightforward north–south direction, serving as a direct continuation of New Bond Street and ending at the junction with Piccadilly. The traffic is one-way, flowing from north to south. Despite its central location, the road is relatively quiet in terms of vehicle traffic, primarily serving delivery vans and taxis, as pedestrian activity dominates the scene.

History of Old Bond Street

Old Bond Street dates back to the late 17th century. It was laid out in the 1680s by developer Sir Thomas Bond, a wealthy baronet and property speculator. The street began to take shape following the Restoration period, during the intense rebuilding and expansion of London's West End.

The street was named after its developer, hence Bond Street. Originally, the entire stretch from Piccadilly northwards was known simply as Bond Street. However, as London grew and the street was extended, the original southern portion was dubbed Old Bond Street to distinguish it from the newer development to the north, now called New Bond Street. This division became widely accepted by the 18th century.

In pronunciation, Bond Street is rendered as 'bɒnd (bon-d street) in British English. Both "Old" and "New" are pronounced normally and form part of the commonly used street names.

Character and Prestige

Old Bond Street is synonymous with luxury and tradition. Its buildings showcase a blend of Georgian and early Victorian architecture, featuring white stucco façades, sash windows, and elegant shopfronts. It is part of the larger Bond Street area, considered one of the most exclusive retail locations in the world.

The street is lined with international flagships and high-end boutiques, attracting a clientele of discerning shoppers, celebrities, and art collectors. The atmosphere is refined, with a quiet sophistication that contrasts with the bustle of Oxford Street to the north.

Notable Landmarks and Attractions

Though only a short stretch, Old Bond Street lies within a district packed with cultural and historical interest:

In the wider area, one finds landmarks such as Green Park, St James’s Palace, and Piccadilly Circus, all within a few minutes’ walk.

Real estate on Old Bond Street is some of the most valuable in the United Kingdom. Most of the properties are commercial units, but the upper floors may house private offices or luxury apartments.

For residential flats (where available), prices may exceed £5,000 per square foot (£53,820 per sq metre) due to the exclusivity and prime location. By comparison, the average London flat costs roughly £750 per square foot (£8,073 per sq metre)2.
