Northumberland Street is a short, narrow backstreet tucked just off the bustling Northumberland Avenue in the heart of the City of Westminster, central London. Though modest in size, this quiet lane offers a unique glimpse into the layered architectural history of the area and serves as a useful pedestrian route in one of London's most tourist-heavy quarters.
Location and Layout
Northumberland Street runs in a north-south direction, connecting Northumberland Avenue at its southern end to Corner House Street at its northern tip. Its total length is approximately 120 metres (390 feet). Despite being only a stone's throw from major thoroughfares and tourist sites, it's relatively calm and often overlooked - a peaceful backstreet just moments away from the energy of Trafalgar Square and the Embankment.
Most of the buildings along Northumberland Street face away from it, backing onto it rather than fronting it. As such, many of the structures here present their rear façades, offering an unusual perspective on the grand hotels and offices that dominate the area. Notably, the street skirts the rear of the Club Quarters Hotel and the Royal Commonwealth Society building. There are also several discreet service entrances and loading bays used by the larger buildings that front onto Northumberland Avenue.
While there are no major shops or restaurants directly on Northumberland Street itself, its position places it just moments away from a wealth of attractions, eateries, and sights in the Westminster area.
