Marble Arch Station is a prominent stop on the London Underground, located on the bustling Oxford Street near the western edge of Central London. Nestled just beside the iconic Marble Arch monument and adjacent to Hyde Park, the station plays a vital role in connecting commuters and tourists alike to some of London’s busiest shopping and leisure areas.
Marble Arch Station is situated in the City of Westminster, at the junction of Oxford Street, Park Lane, and Edgware Road. The famous Marble Arch monument, which gives the station its name, is located directly outside the station’s northern entrance. The station lies roughly 1.3 miles west of Charing Cross by road.
The station first opened on 30 July 1900, as part of the original stretch of what is now known as the Central Line. Initially, the line was operated by the Central London Railway (CLR), and Marble Arch was among its earliest stations. It has retained the same name since opening, a rarity among early Tube stations.
The original station building was designed in the typical CLR style, featuring a modest street-level entrance with red terracotta tiling and glazed panels. That structure was demolished in the 1930s and replaced with subterranean ticket halls and escalators, as part of modernisation works across the network. Today, Marble Arch Station’s entrances are at street level and integrated into the commercial buildings and sidewalks surrounding Oxford Street, making it easy to access while shopping or visiting nearby hotels.
Marble Arch Station is served exclusively by the Central Line, one of the key east–west routes on the London Underground Stations network. While the station does not connect to any National Rail, Docklands Light Railway, or Elizabeth Line services, its position on the Central Line provides rapid access across Greater London.
On the Central Line, the preceding station to Marble Arch heading westbound is Lancaster Gate, and the following station heading eastbound is Bond Street. Both are well-connected stations with interchange possibilities and direct access to important retail and business areas.
There is no direct Underground line between Marble Arch and Charing Cross. However, passengers can take the Central Line eastbound from Marble Arch to Oxford Circus, then change to the Bakerloo Line southbound to Charing Cross Station.
Marble Arch Station once featured one of the last remaining underground toilets accessible to the public, located just outside the station entrance. Though closed in recent years, it was a quirky relic of early 20th-century London infrastructure. Additionally, during its early days, lifts—not escalators—were used to carry passengers down to the platform, a common feature in Edwardian-era Tube design.
