The Penang-born Dr Wu is celebrated for medical student of Chinese descent to study at the University of Cambridge. He is credited with helping to suppress a pneumonic plague in Manchuria and Mongolia, and also for modernizing China's medical services.
Dr Wu had his early education at Penang Free School, where he is honoured with a sports house named after him.
Jalan Dr Wu Lien Teh was created out of land that was part of the city incinerator. It is the second to be named in his honour after Taman Wu Lien Teh in the Green Lane area.
