Jalan SP Chelliah (Lines Road)

Jalan SP Chelliah, George TownJalan SP Chelliah, George Town (2 December 2008)

Jalan S.P. Chelliah is a minor road in George Town. Formerly known as Lines Road, it connects Jalan Gurdwara (Brick Kiln Road) with Patani Road.

The road runs through a working-class neighbourhood of George Town. On both sides of the road are low-rise flats for Government department employees. There are a few low- and middle-cost apartments along the road, taking advantage of its proximity to the centre of George Town. It is very close to the city center, making it a good place to stay.

As with Barracks Road, Lines Road got its name from former military presence, in this instance the Sepoy Lines and Barracks Lines. The road was later renamed after S.P. Chelliah, a leader in Penang's Indian community, and a pioneer of the labour movement. S.P. Chelliah served as a Penang State Executive Councillor responsible for labour and transport affairs, and made a significant contribution to workers' rights, public transport and social welfare. The Penang State Government renamed Lines Road in his honour.
