Jalan Besar is one of the key roads within the settlement of Permatang Tinggi, in Seberang Perai, Penang. Running parallel to Jalan Baru on the west and Jalan Simpah on the east, it stretches from Jalan Tamil in the north to a T-junction with Jalan Baru in the south. The southern section is particularly distinctive, as while Jalan Baru veers east, Jalan Besar continues straight until it merges into it. This makes Jalan Besar one of the more important connectors in the Permatang Tinggi village layout.
Jalan Besar is characterised by its village ambience, lined with single-storey homes and small local establishments. Compared to some of the narrower internal roads, Jalan Besar is slightly broader, making it one of the routes that accommodates more vehicular movement. For local residents, it functions as both a thoroughfare and a communal space where everyday life unfolds.
The road’s position between Jalan Baru and Jalan Simpah gives it strategic importance in the village. Its northern end links to Jalan Tamil, while its southern end joins Jalan Baru, allowing residents easy movement between the core of Permatang Tinggi and the surrounding arterial roads, such as Jalan Rozhan, which connects to Bukit Mertajam and Simpang Ampat. This provides residents of Jalan Besar with good connectivity to nearby towns and markets.
While Jalan Besar itself is largely residential, it lies close to community landmarks located on neighbouring roads. These include the Chapel of St Mary Magdalene on Jalan Gereja and other village shrines and places of worship that serve the diverse population of Permatang Tinggi. This close proximity reinforces Jalan Besar’s role as part of the village’s network of daily life and traditions.
The houses along Jalan Besar are typically modest village homes, reflecting the settlement’s long history as an agricultural community. Many of the homes are single-storey structures with yards, some of which still retain fruit trees and vegetable plots. The sense of continuity is strong here, with generations of families living side by side. This gives Jalan Besar an atmosphere of stability and rootedness, in contrast with the newer developments elsewhere in Seberang Perai.
Jalan Besar is not only a functional road but also part of the village’s living culture. The sight of neighbours conversing by the roadside, children cycling, and the occasional small shop selling snacks or sundries is part of its charm. During festivals, the road often comes alive with decorations and gatherings, providing visitors a glimpse into the warmth of small-community life in Permatang Tinggi.
