Jalan Simpah is one of the local residential roads within the village of Permatang Tinggi, in Seberang Perai, Penang. It begins at the southern end of Jalan Baru and continues southwards until it meets Jalan Tengah. Together with its connecting roads, Jalan Simpah contributes to the orderly street grid of this traditional settlement.
Jalan Simpah runs through a quiet residential part of the village, with landed houses on either side. Like other streets in Permatang Tinggi, it is a narrow two-lane road that primarily serves local traffic. Although not a through-road for major vehicles, Jalan Simpah is important in linking the inner parts of the village to surrounding areas.
The character of Jalan Simpah is distinctly village-like, with a slow pace of life and long-established families making up most of its residents. Many of the houses have been modernised over the years but still retain elements of kampung charm, such as shaded porches, fruit trees, and small gardens. Greenery is a common sight, with hedges, shrubs, and occasional open plots that soften the built-up environment.
At its northern end, Jalan Simpah joins Jalan Baru, providing access to Jalan Rozhan through the village. At the southern end, it links to Jalan Tengah, another important local road. While Jalan Simpah itself is modest, these connections allow residents to reach nearby urban centres including Bukit Mertajam and Simpang Ampat with relative ease.
Jalan Simpah is primarily residential, with no major institutions along its length. However, residents are within short walking distance to the Chapel of St Mary Magdalene, the focal point of Catholic worship in the village. Larger gatherings are held at the Church of the Holy Name of Mary, located further afield but still accessible from the village. Amenities such as shops and eateries are mainly found along Jalan Rozhan and surrounding roads.
Properties along Jalan Simpah are similar in type to those in the rest of Permatang Tinggi, with built-up sizes ranging between 1,000 sq ft (93 sq m) and 1,800 sq ft (167 sq m). As of 2025, property values in this area are typically in the RM320,000 to RM480,000 range1, while monthly rental rates are in the RM850 to RM1,100 range2.
Jalan Simpah is not served directly by public transport, but residents may walk to Jalan Rozhan to access bus services3. Like much of Permatang Tinggi, private vehicles and motorcycles remain the most common modes of daily transport for residents.
The name Simpah is derived from the Malay word for “cluster” or “clump,” which may reflect the way the houses in this area developed in groups, forming part of the close-knit fabric of the village.
