Jalan Baru is one of the small local roads within the village settlement of Permatang Tinggi, in Seberang Perai, Penang. Running in a north-south direction, it connects Jalan Rozhan in the north with Jalan Simpah in the south. Together with Jalan Gereja and Jalan Dewan, it forms a trio of parallel roads that help to structure the internal layout of this traditional settlement.
Jalan Baru is primarily residential, with stretches of landed village houses on either side, interspersed with patches of greenery. Its position, running parallel to the other two roads, makes it part of the compact street grid that defines the heart of Permatang Tinggi. Although modest in scale, Jalan Baru contributes to the overall accessibility and convenience of village life.
Like much of Permatang Tinggi, Jalan Baru retains a quiet, kampung-like atmosphere. The houses here are typically single-storey or two-storey dwellings, many with small gardens, shaded porches, or outdoor spaces for family activities. The pace of life is relaxed, with most residents being long-time members of the community. As with other roads in the village, Jalan Baru offers a contrast to the faster-developing parts of Bukit Mertajam and Simpang Ampat, both of which are nearby.
The northern end of Jalan Baru links to Jalan Rozhan, a major road that provides access to urban amenities including shops, eateries, schools, and healthcare facilities. On the southern end, it connects to Jalan Simpah, another village road that feeds deeper into the settlement. This makes Jalan Baru an important though understated connector within the local road system.
Jalan Baru itself is largely residential, but within walking distance are significant community landmarks such as the Chapel of St Mary Magdalene, the main place of worship for the local Catholic community. For larger gatherings and events, villagers also look towards the Church of the Holy Name of Mary, located further away from the settlement. Proximity to Jalan Rozhan also puts Jalan Baru within easy reach of commercial amenities in Bukit Mertajam.
Residential properties on Jalan Baru are similar in size and value to those on its parallel roads, Jalan Dewan and Jalan Gereja. Houses here generally measure between 1,200 sq ft (111 sq m) and 2,000 sq ft (186 sq m). As of 2025, property prices in the area typically range from RM350,000 to RM500,0001, while rentals, though less common, fall in the RM900 to RM1,200 per month range2.
Public transport does not pass directly along Jalan Baru, but bus services are available on Jalan Rozhan, within walking distance from its northern end3. Most residents, however, rely on motorcycles and private cars for their daily commuting needs.
The name Baru, meaning “new” in Malay, suggests that the road was once a later addition to the older village layout. Today, it is firmly integrated into the street grid of Permatang Tinggi, serving as one of the parallel arteries that give the village its orderly pattern.
